County, suburban schools settle lawsuit

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced Wednesday that the county would not appeal a lawsuit over sales tax revenue and would instead negotiate a timeline to pay suburban school districts the $29 million they are owed.

Brooks made the announcement during a news conference with Jody Siegle, executive director of the Monroe County School Boards Association. Wednesday was the deadline for the county to request that the state Court of Appeals hear its case.

The move caps more than nine months of public discord and a lawsuit between the parties. It also comes a week and a half after Brooks announced she wanted a more collaborative approach to government.

It's not fair to divert public funds that were promised to our children. It's not fair to leave our schools in the lurch. It's not fair to play a shell game with 29 million in taxpayer dollars. And it sends the wrong message to our kids.
